SwiftKey Flow Beta Update

28th January 2013

Hi everyone,

We’re getting closer to launching SwiftKey Flow as part of our next major SwiftKey update, but before we do, we have another beta for all of you Android users to try out!

We’ve listened to your feedback and added your top-requested features: you can now “flow” in pretty much every text field, and you can easily change or correct previously inputted words by tapping on them.

SwiftKey Flow Beta for smartphones (APK, 6.9 MB)
SwiftKey Flow Beta for tablets (APK, 6.9 MB)

Please download the APKs onto your phone or tablet, try them out, and let us know what you think in the SwiftKey VIP Community. We rely on your feedback to ensure that our apps are in the best possible shape before they hit the market.

Charlie Edmunds
Head of Consumer Insight

PS We’d love it if you could nominate our CEO Jon Reynolds for Young European Tech Entrepreneur of the Year at the Europioneers. Jon has built SwiftKey from an idea to a successful and innovative business – and he’s only just turned 27!

Changes in this version:
* Predictions (and Flow) now on in most places (exceptions: email fields, passwords, anywhere where the app doesn’t behave itself with SwiftKey, fields offering their own corrections on Android versions <= 2.2)
* Easier corrections – just tap on the word and SwiftKey will offer you 3 possibilities
* New languages: Thai, Vietnamese, Bosnian, Albanian, Javan, Sundanese (plus those added in 3.1)
* Features from SwiftKey 3.1: Berry theme, split layout in landscape on phones, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Georgian, Hindi, Hinglish, Irish, Macedonian, Spanish (Latin America) and Tagalog
* New layouts for Hindi and Russian
* Ukrainian landscape layout fixed
* Backspacing on to the final word of a multi word prediction (Flow through space)  will now give better alternatives
* Typing style now inferred rather than a setting
* Long press delete accelerates after the first word

Bugs fixed:
* Flowing off shift no longer triggers a change in shift state
* Flow no longer gets stuck when you flow off the bottom of a page
* Quick period working after single letter words
* Arrow key repeats
* Learning when sending messages or tabbing between fields with the enter key fixed
* Azeri capital i behaviour corrected
* Estonian will now predict words containing ö
* Fixed force close on Beta predictions
* Flow trace no longer left behind after flowing
* Mounting an SD card will turn predictions off only if SwiftKey language packs are stored on that SD card
* Keyclick sounds no longer doubled
* Haptic duration made consistent with flow on and off

Known issues:
* Places you still cannot Flow: email fields, passwords, anywhere where the app doesn’t behave itself with SwiftKey, fields offering their own corrections on Android versions <= 2.2
* Selecting and deleting a chunk of text in Samsung email client on SIII and Note 2 deletes text before the cursor as well as after
* Slight jitteriness when toggling between Hindi and Thai primary and secondary layouts
* Turkish i still does not capitalise correctly
* Long pressing SwiftKey mic in Google Now causes the keyboard to disappear
* Occasional surprising capitalisations of flowed words
* Flowing through space often fails after relatively unusual words
* If you experience high memory usage after installing, this may be fixed by rebooting your phone

Thanks for adding the ability to predict in any field! Much appreciated!

  2. abhisahara says:

Though the link says – SwiftKey Flow Beta for smartphones (APK, 6.9 MB)

But in actual the downloaded file says – SwiftKey_Flow_Public_Beta- and is of 6.7 MB

Not to worry as the installed version is the . So i guess its a typo in the filename 🙂

  3. Anhstein says:

Yay! Vietnamese! Thank you! Now I no longer have to run 2 different beta builds!

  4. Ryan Paredez says:

Flowing through space doesn’t work for me like it does in the video and I have been using it since it came out. Kind of dissapointing.

  5. deltatux says:

Hopefully existing SwiftKey users won’t have to repurchase to get Flow when it exits beta, that would be very annoying.

Thank you for listening to the feedback.

  8. Jim Barr says:

I love the updates! Keep up the good work!

BUT…what about the missing row of arrow keys on the Tablet version? I continue to use the Phone version on my Nexus 7, and while it certainly works well, I cannot use the Tablet version because it’s missing the row of Arrow keys.

And honestly, that row of Arrow keys is one of the top reasons I stick with SwiftKey.

Otherwise, this is an excellent. app.

  9. Anthony Zul says:

I can’t get it to type the word “it’s” to save my life. I can’t figure out how to make it flow an apostrophe…

  10. sygyzy says:

I still surprises me that a QR code is not the first thing developer’s add to their update posts.

  11. Guest says:

I installed the phone version on both my phone (S3) and my tablet (Tab 10.1) and now the keyboard portion doesn’t show up, just the predictions. Previous version was working fine, update broken. The updated tablet version works fine on both devices. My S3 is rooted stock JB but with a DPI change from 320 to 240. My tablet is CM 10.1, and with the standard 160 DPI. One note on previous versions is that the arrow keys never showed up on either my tablet or my phone even though I chose that in the settings, but this has something to do with the DPI, as the arrows show up in standard DPI on my S3 (DPI setting of 320).

    • speeb says:

“now the keyboard portion doesn’t show up, just the predictions.”

This new beta is SO FAR advanced, you do not need a keyboard. SwiftKey just KNOWS. Simply accept the predictions on screen and they will always be accurate.

  12. ad24 says:

The best keyboard just got better. Thanks for listening to the feedback.

  13. r1fo says:

Easily one of the best developers out there – thank you for your hard work on this excellent product!!

  14. Nathan J says:

On the last beta, you acknowledged an issue with custom ROMs on the Motorola Atrix. I have the Electrify (basically a Photon, but without 4G) and the last beta would not work (would FC upon opening) on my phone. Swype’s latest beta works fine (well, it doesn’t FC at least, I’m not really happy with it and would like to use SK, but not willing to switch to GB for it). Will definitely try this one.

  16. Dan G. Ochoa says:

You should add the option to personalize learning from previously installed Swiftkey 3

  17. Richard Bateman says:

For some reason these files appear as .bin on Nexus 7 stock. Any ideas?

  18. Julio Pallares says:

Great! Now I like it even more! The with the ability to predict in most places is more useful!

  19. Nick Rosas says:

Love the new update!! 😀 now I can finally remove the 4.2 keyboard which I used to love because I was able to swype anywhere. Haven’t found any bugs yet, and I’m happy about this because it proves your team is committed to the keyboard&it’s supporters.

  20. Laura Ong says:

Would like to ask, is there a chances of Mandarin (Chinese language) to be added in? 🙂

  21. incmobs says:

Thanks for adding Thai language – and the one click keyword edit is awesome too 🙂

  22. The flow trail is hairy visible on tablets.

  23. Patrick Hoang says:

Hi, in the last build you guys said that the flow trail was faint and diminished in some Cyanogen ROMS. This also includes AOKP. This newest update has not fixed this problem yet and I’ve noticed that you guys removed it from the known issues in this update. Is there an ETA on when this problem is fixed?

  26. mprost says:

still no support for multiple users, still no arrow keys in tablet version

  27. Evan Hendra says:

This is just awesome. Just a little issue though. On my nexus 4, the keyboard maybe not detected, so when I rapid tapping the del button, it just went zoom in… Need to fix that I think…

  28. arj2442 says:

Seriously…how do you get flow through space to has never ever worked for me. just shakes and fails. Any advice guys?

  29. Grégory Lusson says:

In french, when you use “:”, “!” or “?” there’s a space before. Previous update was ok with that, add it when it had to be. But with this update, it even delete when we press space bar.

  30. Davide says:

PLEASE add the capability to insert double letters in flow mode, there are different words where the only difference is a double letter.

  31. Ziya Kokarağaç says:

As a paid customer of Swiftkey, what would i like to see when flow enabled new version of swiftkey are:

    1. First of all ability to edit personal dictionary and cloud backup.(preferably automatic backup&recovery to a swiftkey account.)

    2. Ability to choose more than 3 predictions when touched on a word.

    3. Fast choosing between languages.(enabling up to three languages together is a good thing but- an important but- in many languages there are lots of similar words and by being precise user i don’t want to write english version of a turkish word. For example: televizyon is turkish and television is english.

The last two are mainly about a language.
    4. Corrected Turkish “i” capitalisation issue.

    5. Turkish keyboard layout option. But as an option. I would like to write in my language but using English US keyboard layout.

Thank you for your beautiful product. Hope my suggested opinions will help you improve the keyboard.

  32. It isn’t working on my Xperia S. Click on INSTALL does nothing..

  33. Jeremy Cox says:

I would love to see a separate number row option above the letters. The note 2 keyboard has it, but I love SwiftKey flow

  34. Sebastian Fernandez Ellero says:

Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V. Android 2.3.
The new beta works way better than the previous version:
    1. It´s faster (no longer lags).
    2. Works in almost any field.
    3. The “tap to predict” works.
    4. Flow through space works flawlessly now.
    5. Lower memory usage (35Mb).

  35. William Wood says:

Please add an option to squeeze keyboard to one side for one handed operation on galaxy note as native note does. This prevents me and many others from currently utilizing the app. Thanks!

    • myepicyear says:

That’s a bunch of crap. People use SwiftKey because of it’s superior typing and prediction capabilities. This is a general keyboard for everyone, not just for you and your Galaxy Note. I’m glad you enjoy squeezing your keyboard and everything, but nobody except for users with a phablet will get any benefit from that at all. The fastest way to make a good app suck is to try and be all things to all people. There are lots of Android devices out there, and the SwiftKey experience needs to be consistent and universal, or else the app will look and function like a nightmare.

So again, if you and “many others” use keyboards primarily for their ability to squeeze, you’re using the wrong one. This app is about efficiency, quality, and for the most part, simplicity. Please don’t be so selfish and expect every feature you think of to be added to every app that you use.

    • Awesome idea, great solution for those of us who like to flow quickly using one hand.

    • theOnlyBenReese says:

I agree this would be nice. The Kii keyboard has all the customization options I want like persistent number row, adjustable spacing and margins, etc. But it just doesn’t work like SwiftKey.

  36. Jx7 says:

Still no AZERTY keyboard in spanish language… what a shame…

  37. atolstikov says:

arrows are present in this version?

  38. TwoEyedPsyclops says:

when i press install on my galaxy nexus nothing happens, it doesnt even highlight blue like the cancel button.

  39. Miguel Ramirez says:

The new flow beta versions are great. One thing I would like to see is more colored themes. My roommate for example wants something pink. But opposite of the fuscia color that has a white background. We like the dark backgrounds. Imagine the neon and pumpkin layout except instead of blue and orange you have option to pick pink, and green, silver, red and other colors.
    Thanks again.

  40. swiftman says:

It would be nice if you add a row of number on top just like the samsung keyboard has it, it would be nice for that people that type alot of numbers, that way we don’t have to go back and forth clicking the number icon, or lose time by hard pressing a key to get that number… Enable and disable option… Thank you…

  41. Paul Walther says:

I guess I’m one of like 5 people that desperately want this app to support Japanese. Oh there are few things I would like to see.. Better space predictions… So many times I have complete words except for an n or a b separating them but the app misses that… so frustrating. (Yes your app still rocks. I look forward to this new version.)

  42. Dark_Laser says:

Thanks for pushing out an update exactly when I check for one, but what ugly phone is that?

  43. Where is the irish language pack? Thought it was added.

  44. Eric says:

two thumbs!!! pleaaaaaaase…. i constantly find myself struggling between using Keymonk keyboard (which is WAAAAAY faster, even with flow-through-space on swiftkey) and swiftkey. i like swiftkey so much better for its beautiful and amazing interpretations of sloppy swipes…. but typing “Montana” with keymonk is a single motion, 1/4 sec, two thumbed swipe. it’s just faster. please end this internal struggle and make the decision for me. just add multi-touch. you will be the official king of keyboards.

  45. Deepak Karambelkar says:

For Galaxy Note II, which one would work better – the phone version or the tablet one?

  46. Tim Wilkins says:

I love this keyboard I am using it all the time. Thanks for the work you have done.

  47. BC2 says:

I think it’s great that the ability to predict in any field has been added, good work.

To take it a step further, it would be fantastic if SwiftKey could detect what sort of field you’re typing into, and then adapt accordingly. For example, when typing out a website in the browser field, SwiftKey would know not add any spaces after a website is entered using flow. It’s sometimes frustrating being left with “Google .com” for example with a space in the middle, then having to go back and remove the space for every time a website is typed out using flow.

  48. Cliff Tam says:

a personal dictionary will be nice. Keep up with the beta. I love it!!

  49. TallGuy says:

With the ability to use this now in almost all fields, this app is massively improved. I like it much better than the stock Swype now, especially the prediction engine. Just got the new beta, so will give it a run through in the next few days.

  50. Wizard says:

This is a brilliant all around update, but the one thing Swype has that SwiftKey desperately needs is gestures. Please, please, please introduce gestures in a future release!

  51. AD says:

It really sucks that I cannot pick predictions in a web browser. I know you think it is a “feature” to disallow this, but it is not. It sucks. And I would really like it fixed.

  52. Issues with the new update Samsung s3 4.1.1 Android. I’ve been using Swiftkey Flow for months, stopped working did the update. Uninstalled and reinstalled. Now it is stuck in Spanish and I never downloaded that language pack. Don’t know what to do.

  53. Please, increase the size of letters as an option, in landscape mode letters it’s too small and therefore a lot of unused free space just wasted. And I have to use glasses all the time. I’ll pay for this great app if you will do it (options for letters size in both modes)

  54. Jez says:

I would love to be able to turn on the flow with a click rather than have to type old school.

Also when correcting words you need to get to right point of the word or it splits it in two. This means correcting after you finish writing is a real pain. If you can press on a word and have it highlight the whole word would allow speedy corrections.

  55. Joe says:

My phone crashes when I try to download this new version. Does this happen to anyone else?

  56. Michael Nicotra says:

I’m a user of the paid SwiftKey app and really like the flow aspect of the text entry but coming from swype I still prefer their expanded word prediction. If you add more options for word prediction this app would be perfect!

  57. Everytime i download it onto my phone (samsung galaxy s 4g) it doesnt show up and as and app and doesnt work, It worked once then after that wont work again. Forced close every time.

  58. I love is app but it has been problematic from day one on my att gs3. The swiftkey keyboard icon keeps showing up randomly in my notification bar on the top of my screen asking me to select which input method i wanna use as my default keyboard. And when i obviously choose flow beta, the prompt disappears but it almost NEVER chooses flow beta and the miniature keyboard in my notification bar NEVER gies away! This is so frustrating and has me conflicted on whether or not to just erase the entire program

  59. thisphuckinguy says:

Any plans for giving us the option of wanting a dedicated voice button instead of the comma button?

  60. s rajeev says:

hello, i have a serious problem with the beta. i have been using the beta (i guess the old one that expired on feb 1), which by the way has been great. but today when i logged in, i was told the beta had expired. before i could download the new beta version (0.76), i had to reboot my galaxy note (running 4.0.4). my note is encrypted and has a password. now i am unable to enter the password, i suppose because the input method is the (expired earlier) swiftkey flow beta. is there any way i can bypass the input method (the expired beta) so that i can enter my password? i tried attaching an OTG USB keyboard, but that did not work. i am a paid subscriber to swiftkey. my login is please tell me how i can ‘unexpire’ the old beta so that i can get into my phone. this is an emergency.

  61. Robert says:

Galaxy note 2 calculator input screwed up on numbers greater than 10000

  62. It doesnt preddict smileys on normal keyboard. Have to switch to smileys keyboard to have a preddiction of a smile. Pls fix.

  63. Steven says:

SwiftKey Flow seriously hates Google Chrome now. When I type in the address bar, if I type too fast, it will pop up with the suggested address, but will start typing in the middle of the suggestion instead of overwriting it.

Also, typing in certain fields will sometimes cause the cursor to jump around.

  64. Stephen Paice says:

Why can’t I install the beta?? The install option is inactive. I can see only cancel.

  65. NexusSe7en says:

Awesome app. Only ask for better input for hyphenated words. If I enter a dash between multiple words, instead of the the dash appearing between the words with spaces on either side, the auto suggestion should offer a hyphenate. Would also be cool to capitalize by dragging outside of the keyboard and then flowing back to complete the word.

  66. Mike Gregorio says:

using a samsung galaxy tab 2 10.1, the app crashes when a logitech bluetooth keyboard is recognized. this occurs in the current release of swiftkey too,…

  67. Jake says:

Can we get swiping and predictions in more fields? I’ve been wishing for this in Snapchat for some time now! Thanks, and excellent work on the apps!!

  68. Julio Pallares says:

I have a Samsung Galaxy III and notice that when I type there is delay between my typing and the keyboard response, it gets stuck sometimes.

  69. david44 says:

Version crashes my Galaxy Note 2 very often. I was forced to uninstall it! Too bad, because excellent!

  70. jmot205 says:

I would find it very useful and polished if, in text fields that enable
SwiftKey to provide predictions (and therefore use Flow), a subtle
visual indicator was present. Perhaps the SwiftKey logo on the
123/settings button could glow? A few times I have gone to use Flow/predictions,
only to find out that this particular text field doesn’t allow it (despite it being predictable in some fields).

  71. Abdallah El-Falou says:

Swype is smart about punctuation; swiping down to the apostrophe actually adds an apostrophe. This solves a whole lot of issues, like “it’s” vs. “its”. Also, starting a swipe at the apostrophe and going towards ‘s’ will add “‘s” to any word. I find this much more effective than saving multiple versions of every word (e.g. mom vs. mom’s vs. moms).

  72. rvichar says:

how come I can’t swipe to delete like before? I guess there is no way to determine whether I am flowing or wanting to delete an incorrect word quickly.

  73. Joey says:

Try typing “predictions aren’t” via flow through space. Also, I feel like the predictions aren’t as good anymore for shorter words.

  74. s rajeev says:

latest beta has an issue with galaxy note calculator: as you enter a number greater than 1,000 the cursor moves to the 4th digit (ie thousands) instead of remaining at the 1st digit (ie ones).

  75. iron2000 says:

Hope that Chinese and Japanese support will come soon.

  76. vinnie says:

Hi, first of all – thanks for all new awesome features of SwiftKey Flow. I appreciate it. However I have problem with finding the ` character. I need it. Could You help me find it?

  77. Freeze says:

Since the last beta update I can provoke Swiftkey Flow to freeze by typing German word combinations like “ich’s” “wir’s”. I think that only accrues when writing a little longer texts.
    Keep up the great work.

  78. cchhaarrdd says:

When its enabled, it affects the calculator.

  79. Baz says:

I seem to have major issues with Evernote, predictions going haywire
Still don’t feel it’s as smooth as eg Smart Keyboard Pro
More themes needed – again the black & white themes in Smart Keyboard Pro are the cleanest I’ve seen
Agree with those asking for a number row

  80. flow does not work with android calculator the cursor jumps mid entry when you type more than 3 characters

  81. Amber Klein says:

On my ATT Samsung Galaxy Note II, using the AT&T messages app, when creating a new text, Swift key Flow Beta freezes after typing the first letter in the contact field. The error message is “Unfortunately, Swift Key Flow Beta has stopped.” Is this a known bug?
    Thanks for your assistance.

  82. first i download a trial and tagalog language. after that i have a paid versión but no tagalog language. why?

  83. Abhishek says:

I found that swift key has a problem with calculator on Samsung galaxy S III.

If I need to type 123456, I find with swift key keyboard it types 156234. After entering 1234, cursor moved next to digit 1 and type remaining digits after 1.

  84. Kathey Hunt says:

Does anyone have any trouble flowing when the word you want to use begins with a letter on the top line of the keyboard? As an example, I had to type the word “ț trouble” above. The keys stick and I get a foreign language character. I left an example within the quotation marks in my comment.

  85. Matt Duranso says:

Just to reiterate two points in previous comments: 1) Need something for double letters please. Just a loop over the letter (a la swype) should be an easy fix. 2) Flow over apostrophe to add ‘s to any word. Thanks for a great product.

  86. Anon says:

I miss the swipe down gesture to make the keyboard go away. Can you add swiping down from the predictions words put the keyboard away. Thank you.

  87. Brooke Hoyer says:

SwiftKey Flow Beta quit working suddenly on my Samsung Galaxy S3. I updated. No luck. Then I attempted to use the VIP forum. I set up an account and got the validation email. After clicking through the validation link I was promoted to sign in It claimed that my password or user names was invalid even though I was using the ones I had created minutes before. Very frustrating especially since I had come to rely on flow.

  88. Kyle says:

Flowing to the space key does not work so well on the HTC Droid DNA… everything is fantastic, but whenever swipe down to the space key, it rarely adds a space. It seems to attempt to add other characters (the characters i hit on my way to the space bar) before adding a space and my words get all screwed up

  89. Please make it so you can sqeeze the keyboard to either side for us note 2 users!!!

  90. JA Fernandez Caiga says:

Can you give us a link for downloading the Language Packs. PLease. Thanks a bunch. 🙂

  91. Popot says:

I have downloaded it so Very Very long

  92. Bronson says:

Why is there still no option to remove the word prediction bar? I hate word prediction with a passion and the bar wastes screen space! Please add an option to remove that, then I would buy this app!
